How do I place panels precisely instead of eyeballing them?
Three separate controls decide whether a panel lands where you meant it to. Two of them are easy to miss.
Quick answer
Hold or press R for snap mode to place an object on the grid. Rotate with the middle mouse button — moving the mouse up and down rotates on the x and z axes, left and right on the y axis. Since Update 1.0.6, the action key, Q by default, changes how fine the grid and the rotation steps are.
Steps
- Pick up the panel or tool with the left mouse button.
- Use R for snap mode so the object aligns to the grid rather than to your aim.
- Rotate with the middle mouse button: mouse up and down for the x and z axes, left and right for the y axis.
- Press the action key, Q by default, to change the grid and rotation finesse if the steps are too coarse or too fine.
- Double-tap reset rotation quickly to lay an object flat, which Update 1.0.5 added for exactly this.
Requirements / limits
- The R binding and the middle-mouse rotation axes come from the developer's own FAQ.
- Finesse control on the action key is a 26 August 2026 change. Guides recorded before that date describe a game with one grid size.
- A community Phase 4 build guide uses the same snap placement to lock a tractor beam in the middle of a machine, which is what grid placement is for: parts that must not drift.
- Every action, including scroll up and scroll down individually, can be rebound since Update 1.0.5.
Common mistakes
- Fighting the grid instead of changing its finesse, on a build where that control now exists.
- Rotating with the mouse in the wrong plane and concluding rotation is broken; the axis depends on whether you move the mouse vertically or horizontally.
- Placing a load-bearing tool loose and expecting it to hold. Grid placement and Sticky Tools solve different halves of that.
Still unverified
- How many finesse levels are there, and what does each snap to?Not verifiedUpdate 1.0.6 states that the action key changes grid and rotation finesse. It does not enumerate the levels.
